Group and rank partners with tiers

Use partner tiers (levels such as Gold or Premier) to group partners, show the tier on listings and sort your directory by tier.

Written by Ali Winberry

Tiers group your partners into levels, such as Gold, Silver and Registered, and let you rank them. You create tiers in Tiers, in your directory's sidebar, and put each partner in one tier. Visitors see a partner's tier on its listing card and profile page. This article is for vendors.

How tiers work

Every partner belongs to exactly one tier. Each directory has a default tier, named "Default" until you rename it, and partners without another tier sit there. The order of tiers in Tiers is their rank: the tier at the top ranks highest.

When tiers are on, visitors see:

  • The tier name and icon at the top of each partner's listing card.

  • The tier name in the header of the partner's profile page.

  • Tier sort options in the directory's Sort by menu.

Because every partner shows a tier, rename the default tier to something that reads well on a card, such as "Partner".

Create a tier

To create a partner tier:

  1. In your directory's sidebar, click Tiers.

  2. Click Create tier.

  3. In Title, enter the tier's name, up to 150 characters.

  4. Optionally, under Icon, upload a square JPG, PNG or GIF image, up to 500 px wide and 1 MB.

  5. Click Save.

The tier's page opens with "Added" and the tier's name. A directory can have up to 60 tiers.

Rank tiers

To rank partner tiers, drag the rows in Tiers into order, highest tier at the top. You see "Order changed". The Tier sort on your directory follows this order.

Put partners in a tier

You can set a partner's tier from the tier or from the partner. To add partners from the tier's page:

  1. In Tiers, click the tier.

  2. In Assigned entries, click Browse.

  3. In Edit entries, select the partners for the tier.

  4. Click Done.

You see "Entries updated".

To set the tier from the partner's page, open the partner in Partners, choose a Tier in Profile settings and click Save.

A partner can be in one tier at a time, so adding a partner to a tier moves it out of its old one. Removing a partner from a tier's Assigned entries moves it back to the default tier. Partners can't change their own tier.

Sort the directory by tier

Tier sorting shows your highest-ranked tier first. Pick it as your directory's default sort in Customizations > Configuration > Directory sorting:

Sort

Order

Tier

Tier rank, then a random order within each tier

Tier and review count

Tier rank, then the partners with the most reviews

Tier and review rating

Tier rank, then the partners with the highest rating

The two review options appear only when reviews are on for your directory. Visitors can also pick these options from Sort by. See Choose how partners are sorted.

Rename or delete a tier

To rename a tier, open it in Tiers, change Title and click Save. You see "Tier saved".

To delete a tier, open it, click Delete tier and confirm. Its partners move to the default tier. Deleting a tier can't be undone, and the default tier can't be deleted.

Tips for setting up tiers

If your partner program has no tiers yet, start small:

  • Create two tiers, such as "Partner" (the default) and "Premier".

  • Put a small group in the top tier, about 10% of your partners or fewer, so the tier stays meaningful.

  • Launch, see how partners and visitors respond, then add tiers if you need them.
